The Maintenance Team Leader will provide front line leadership for maintenance teams and liaise with external contractors and service providers to ensure that the bakery is maintained in an optimum state to meet production needs. The Team Leader will lead, motivate and develop employees to achieve outstanding results according to set targets through enhancing teamwork, effective communications, actively listening, and driving change. The Team Leader will also drive accountability and ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards.

 Key areas of responsibility:

Safety, Health and Environment

  • Ensure teams follow safe work practices. Address unsafe working conditions and any team member safety concerns. Complete thorough incident investigations and develop corrective actions to appropriately reduce or eliminate risk. Conduct workplace inspections and audits and address risk. Drive a culture of 0 tolerance with LOTO and other life saving procedures;
  • Liaise with Government agencies such as Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Ministry of the Environment and other regulatory bodies as required to ensure compliance;
  • Provide orientation and training as required to ensure an effective and efficient work force. Assign and oversee formal training and sign off on completed training requirements;

Quality / Food Safety

  • Ensure all maintenance aspects of equipment meet food safety standards. Adhere to our HACCP plan and SQF II requirements;

Production / Delivery

  • Direct and lead maintenance team in preventative maintenance and repair of production equipment. Schedule the team using maintenance planning and work order systems. Assess contractor skill requirements and liaise with contractors to provide assistance needed;
  • Provide leadership necessary to ensure the team meets or exceeds targets;
  • Ensure systems are used and up to date for all PM's / CM's;
  • Complete maintenance planner tasks if no Maintenance planner is in Bakery.
  • Generate preventative work orders and PO's and assign them to mechanics or contractors and generate any needed POs for contractor unplanned maintenance. Review and approve close of WO's for site mechanics and contractors;

Cost

  • Review results and respond to issues with appropriate actions;
  • Optimize maintenance spend in alignment with Corporate preferred supplier program;
  • Source and order all parts and maintain spare parts inventory;

Productivity

  • Use information tools to look for opportunities to improve line efficiency, trends, and drive bakery priorities. Track and eliminate causes of downtime.  Lead smaller scope process improvements to achieve specific measurable goals;
    • Conduct detailed root cause investigations for large deviations from target;
    • Own maintenance deliverables as assigned within the planning, assessment, installation and testing of new equipment, methods and/or products;
    • Own plant downtime reduction initiatives;
    • Arrange follow up to work orders & generate any needed follow ups in the maintenance planning system;

People / Morale

  • Establish and sustain a positive and cooperative employee environment through effective communications with all employees;
  • Provide effective, timely and fair performance and disciplinary feedback to team members and document as needed;

Other Duties

  • Assist as needed in interviewing, hiring and onboarding of new employees;
  • Verify and maintain attendance records. Review and address attendance issues;
  • Resource shifts and ensure availability for rotating shifts including weekends in a 24/7 environment;

  • Preventive Maintenance schedule attainment
  • Training completions and Incident investigations
  • Equipment malfunction incidents
  • Staffing and Labour cost, Overtime, Operating supplies budget
  • Downtime %
  • Engagement scores and Absenteeism

 

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of maintenance Team Lead experience is better if it is in food manufacturing
  • Should be a Licensed Millwright with electrical experience;
  • Experience with maintenance regulations, PLC’s and Preventative maintenance programs;
  • Ability to work assigned hours, including overtime and weekends

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work with urgency in a fast-paced production environment;
  • Ability to organize & delegate work using Leader Standard Work to hold others accountable for results; 
  • Willingness to learn & apply new skills, and teach others by sharing knowledge to grow self & the business;
  • Must be an effective communicator who inspires and motivates, and creates an environment for open and trusting 2-way communication with all levels in the organization;
  • Ability to create a team environment by sharing knowledge, involving employees in developing solutions, and providing guidance, direction, feedback and recognition to the team;
  • Proficient in computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook);
  • Experience in structured Maintenance Planning and Scheduling processes;
  • Familiarity with automated process/packaging technology is an asset;
  • High school diploma required. College or University Degree is an asset
