POSITION: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT (EDA)

DEPARTMENT: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

STATUS: REGULAR PART TIME

SALARY: $23.43 - $23.78

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Emergency Department provides full service to meet the unscheduled and emergency needs of patients. STEGH's Emergency departments is one of the best performing hospitals in Ontario for ED wait times. With improvements to the waiting area, triage and specialized zones where less urgent patients can be services, we provide faster service and improved care for our patients. With state of the art equipment and nurses and physicians with advanced skills in emergency medical, the ED team at STEGH is there to make every journey through the ED an excellent patient experience. 

The Emergency Department Assistant at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is responsible for items including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness throughout the Emergency Department in accordance with standard operating procedures and infection control guidelines
  • Transporting patients
  • Maintaining supplies and materials throughout the hospital
  • Assisting and supporting the Emergency Department team in providing patient care as delegated. The Emergency Department Assistant will contribute to ensuring that services are provided in an efficient, timely and safe manner for patients, staff and visitors. 

HOURS:

The successful candidate must be available to work all tours applicable to the department. In addition, this position must be flexible to occasional changes in hours when required to meet the operational needs of the department and be able to commit to the non-availability standards outlined in the Collective Agreement. 

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Preference will be given to those with a minimum of one (1) year previous experience within the last three (3) years working in a hospital setting  and/or with patient populations; previous experience cleaning in a healthcare setting is preferred
  • Preference will be given to those who have completed the two (2) day Safe Management training specific to the Emergency Department
  • Current BCLS certification is required
  • Effective positive interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure, be self-directed, critically think and prioritize duties
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, tact and diplomacy at all times
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform moderate heavy work, involving lifting, considerable walking, standing, bending, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to work with the cleaning products provided.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated flexibility within roles and responsibilities with the ability to adapt to changes in assignment throughout a shift
  • Computer skills to include the regular use of Outlook, order entry software, RL6, Internet/Intranet including STEGHnet, and basic word processing.
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS, Infection Control, Health and Safety, Patient Centered Care and Waste Management Protocols
  • Team and customer focused, with the ability to communicate respectfully in a pleasant, flexible and professional manner with all patients, families, staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to patient and staff safety
  • Ability to adapt and work within a constantly changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis in accordance with STEGH's Attendance at Work Program
  • Acceptable performance record



Successful candidates must provide evidence of a fully completed COVID-19 vaccination status prior to your first day of work. Any candidate entering the facility to attend an interview will be required to provide evidence of a fully completed COVID-19 vaccination status. To be considered fully immunized, individuals need to have received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days earlier than the date they arriving to an interview or to begin work at STEGH.
