POSITION:                                         Utility Service Mechanic (Distribution)

DEPARTMENT:                                  Distribution & Conveyance  

 

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to perform general, manual labor duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of the water and wastewater distribution and conveyance system.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of the water/wastewater conveyance system: clears debris from manholes, sewer lines, sewer stream crossings, easements, valve boxes, etc.; diagnoses leaks, blockages or other problems; cuts in valves, tees, and beds; saw cuts roads and streets; replaces service lines; performs confined space entries in manholes; cleans manholes and lines; and changes out sewer rings and lids on manholes, fire hydrants, etc.

Performs related activities: repairs asphalt, concrete, yards and other areas that are disrupted as a result of repair work; may perform smoke testing and manhole inspections, which may include the use of a pole camera; and may operate water valves and repair water lines

Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project or work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public.

Locates and identifies water and wastewater lines to be repaired and utilities that must be excavated around.

Gathers tools and equipment needed to complete work activities: loads and unloads materials, tools and supplies; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs as needed; and notifies supervisor of needed equipment replacements and repairs.

Cleans work site after work is completed.

Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains tapping machine, saws, pumps, grouting equipment, tamps, rollers, jackhammers, thumpers, and other tools and equipment.

Communicates with supervisor, other CCWA employees, vendors, third party service contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required;  or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all CCWA or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

PAYGRADE:                 13H (Starts at $18.02/hourly) or 14H (with Class A CDL)(Starts at $19.82/hourly)
