Current Rate of Pay: Min $27.75 - Max  $ 28.19

Position Summary:

The Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) Technician is responsible for the cleaning and decontamination, assembly, testing and validation, and sterilization of complex surgical instruments, medical devices, supplies and equipment required for safe patient care. In addition, the MDR Technician performs daily biological testing on all sterilization equipment and routine biological monitoring of each sterilization load to ensure critical parameters are being met. Certified by the Medical Device Reprocessing Association of Ontario, the MDR Technician ensures the standards and guidelines governing sterile processing activity within GGH are being met and exceeded.

While reprocessing and sterilization activities are considered the primary responsibility, the MDR Technician is also responsible for other associated support functions such as ensuring an adequate inventory of instruments and medical devices are properly distributed in order to meet the needs of doctors, nurses, surgeons and technical staff throughout the organization.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Successful completion of MDRAO Techniques Course or an Accredited College course within the last five (5) years
  • 2 -3 years recent relevant experience in sterile processing
  • Experience with various sterilization methods (steam, low temperature)
  • Experience in the care and handling of complex surgical instruments, equipment and medical devices of all surgical services
  • Demonstrated understanding of the function of sterilization equipment, washer/decontaminators, ultrasonic machines, pasteurizers, sterilizers, drying equipment, and heat sealers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning, decontamination, inspection and testing, packaging and sterilization of instrumentation; pasteurization of respiratory equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of inventory control and handling procedures for contaminated, sterile, non-sterile, and consumable medical surgical supplies
  • Ability to work with cleaning agents and disinfectants, and wear full personal protective attire while working in decontamination area
  • Must be versatile and rotate through and assist with all work assignments
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Infection Control and principles of Asepsis
  • Able to lift and carry heavy items, push and pull carts, stand and walk for prolonged periods and perform repetitive tasks
  • Ability to follow and be accountable to MDR departmental policies and procedures, CSA and PIDAC standards, Health Canada regulations and guidelines as they apply to reprocessing of reusable medical devices  
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated critical problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work and exercise judgement independently, with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team, along with the ability to take direction from co-workers, in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Ability to prioritize and to be well organized with tasks and record keeping
  • Basic computer skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
