North Salt Spring Waterworks District is seeking a Senior Water Quality Lead.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Senior Water Quality Lead plays a key role in ensuring and facilitating high quality and safe water production and distribution in the local district and other districts as assigned.

This position works within the Operations department and is responsible for a variety of functions including Quality Control, Documentation, and support to both the Operations Manager and the Operations teams.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the water quality and quantity monitoring programs
  • Prepare the monthly sampling schedule and contract district systems according to established sampling plans.
  • Liaise with staff at external
  • Review results of laboratory analysis of water samples and notifies Operations Manager and Waterworks Supervisor of anomalous results.
  • Recommend corrective actions.
  • Reviews, and verifies data in water quality
  • Monitors lake levels and climate data
  • Monitors bacteriological blooms in Lakes for toxin production and makes sampling
  • Conducts dam inspections, records relevant data
  • Provide guidance on flushing, decontamination, and sampling measures to address watermain break events.
  • Provide guidance and input into the annual flushing
  • Collects reviews and analyzes hydrological data, maintains related databases, and prepares related reports.
  • Performs arithmetic calculations required in preparing drawings, plans and maps; prepares graphs, charts, sketches, schedules, and diagrams, as required.
  • Downloads data from hydrometric monitoring stations and SCADA.
  • Facilitates the creation of studies and reports
  • Provides support, guidance and direction to operations staff as
  • Coordinates work based on dam inspections and Dam Safety
  • Prepares public water quality and emergency notices and advisories as directed by the Operations Manager.
  • Facilitates the maintenance and calibration of hydrometric monitoring
  • Supervise/mentor junior water quality
  • Responds to inquiries from the public, clients, and other employees
  • Assists with emergency response and safety projects
  • The position may occasionally require some after-hours work when required to respond to emergencies.
  • Some of this work will take place outside, including field inspections, potentially in inclement weather.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Water Engineering Technology or equivalent and minimum six (6) years of directly related experience as a water quality specialist in a municipal waterworks environment.
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of water treatment and water distribution systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, procedures, practices, techniques, tools, and equipment used in waterworks construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Ability to record and enter data and related materials
  • Knowledge of dam inspection procedures
  • Excellent knowledge of legislation, regulations, standards, and guidelines related to water licensing and drinking water quality.
  • Excellent knowledge of waterborne diseases and their public health
  • Excellent knowledge of water treatment and disinfection methods such as DAF, chlorine, and UV light.
  • General knowledge of laboratory methods used for analysis of drinking water and source water.
  • Basic knowledge of limnology and surface water hydrology, and aquatic ecosystems
  • Experience collecting water samples from source water and water treatment facilities and distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of SCADA
  • Experience with field data monitoring equipment such as data loggers, flow meters, remote sensors.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and satisfactory criminal record
  • Registration with the Applied Science Technologist and Technicians of British Columbia is an asset.
  • Additional training in Water Quality, Water Treatment, Environmental Technology or in a relevant science such as biology or environmental science.
