CLINICAL EXTERN – NURSING

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance is currently accepting applications for Clinical Externs – Nursing. This externship is an exciting employment opportunity for students currently enrolled in a recognized RN or RPN program, to contribute their knowledge and skills in a medical/surgical care environment supporting the communities we serve.
Clinical Externs will be working in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider (UCP). Successful candidates will gain valuable patient care experience and build connections with a team of passionate Inter-professional care providers in a hospital setting. Clinical Externs may be considered for nursing opportunities upon graduation and licensure.

POSITION TITLE: Clinical Extern – Nursing

SITE: Externs will be placed within one of the units at Stratford General Hospital. Please indicate in the screening questions your unit preference in order.
• Stratford General Hospital – Integrated Stroke Unit/Telemetry
• Stratford General Hospital – Medicine/Complex Continuing Care
• Stratford General Hospital – Inpatient Surgical Unit
• Clinton Public Hospital – Inpatient Unit/Emergency Department
• Seaforth Community Hospital – Inpatient Unit/Emergency Department
• St. Marys Memorial Hospital – Inpatient Unit/Emergency Department


STATUS: Temporary Full-Time x5

SHIFTS: 12-hour shifts
Availability: Required for Days and Nights including Weekends and Stat Holidays

REPORTS TO: Manager of respective area

DATE REQUIRED: April 29, 2024 – September 1, 2024 with an option to work reading week and Christmas Break

SALARY: $20.60 per hour
This position has the opportunity to be partially funded through BioTalent's Student Work Placement Program. The successful applicant must be willing to participate in the application process to this program.
VACATION: Successful candidates will have the option to request for unpaid time off up to two weeks during the temporary full-time term.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Nursing students enrolled in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in their final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program
- Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support or willingness to obtain

DUTIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
- Practices using acquired knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties;
- Follows organizational policies and professional standards;
- Participates in patient assessments and basic patient care; take and record vital signs to include temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, and intake-output measurements
- Supports activities of daily living;
- Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever necessary;
- Contributes to care planning and evaluation;
- Assists nursing staff in complicated treatment procedures
- Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating
- Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries;
- Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards;
- Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need;
- Provides transfer of accountability at shift report and when going on break;
- Contributes to and supports positive team functioning.

- Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
- Developing clinical skills and competencies
- Advancing interpersonal and communication skills
- Progressing problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work as an effective member of an inter-professional team
- Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality
